Even though part of the world seems to be at a standstill due to the coronavirus, there is still plenty going on at the Wilhelmstrasse 1 site. In strict compliance with the specified safety distances, a European team started to pour the concrete slab on the Thursday before Easter. The structures of the reinforcing steel are gradually disappearing beneath a grey concrete blanket. This means more than 2,000 cubic metres of concrete are filled – enough to fill the same as an Olympic swimming pool. At the moment, articulated lorries are also bringing in a whole lot of broken aggregates – better known as gravel – in order to create a stable, approximately one metre high foundation for the crane. The first construction crane will be set up on 17 April near the building site gate (Rheinstrasse entrance). The second crane will follow in May and it will be placed on the Commerzbank side.
